해초더미에 포위되고 있는 플로리다 해변 

미국 플로리다 해변을 해초더미가 덮치고 있습니다. 16일 CNN 등 미국 매체보도에 따르면 대서양에서 대량으로 발생한 모자반(sargassum)이 아프리카 해안에서 멕시코만에 이르기까지 5천마일에 걸쳐 번식하고 있습니다. 지금까지 규모 중 가장 큰 규모라고 하네요. 당국은 관광업에 치명적인 문제를 일으킬까 우려하고 있습니다. 이 모자반이 해변에 실려와 쌓이면 썩은 달걀 냄새를 풍기는 황화수소 가스를 내뿜는데 이 가스는 호흡기 문제를 일으키는 독성까지 지닌다 하고요 벌써부터 냄새가 많이 나 지역주민들은 스트레스를 받고 있네요.

Just came back from Cancun, Mexico.  The beaches were so inundated with this stuff that very few people went in the water even though the resorts were trying to use huge Sand Scrubbers to keep up with the relentless drift. 

이제 막 멕시코 칸쿤에서 돌아왔는데요 해변이 해초들로 완전 뒤덮여 있었어요. 바다물에 들어간 사람들이 거의 없었어요. 리조트들은 기계를 활용해서 이 끊임없는 해초들을 없애려고 했지만 소용없었죠.

I was living in the Yucatan of Mexico the year of that horrible seaweed. It was insane how much was on the beach. I swam through it just to get to the clear areas.

멕시코 유카탄반도에 살았는데요 해초문제가 심각했어요. 해변에 얼마나 많이 밀려오는지 미칠지경이였거든요. 깨끗한 장소까지 헤엄쳐 오느라 죽는줄알았어요.

So far I have seen no complaints against utilizing Sargassum Seaweed as fuel for burning nor complaints about utilizing as biogas. 

지금까지 이 해초를 태워서 연료로 쓰는 거 문제없어보였는데요. 또 바이오가스로 활용하는 것도요.

2nd Expert : "This is un-usual, not normal, this is very wrong, it may be toxic..."

전문가마다 말이 다르네요. 첫번째 전문가는 "일상적이고 문제없고 독성이 없다..".  두번째 전문가는 "이건 이상한 일이고 아주 잘못된 것이다. 독성이 있을 지도 모른다"

It is not toxic when in the ocean. When it washes up on shores it dies, and then becomes toxic.

사실 바다속에 있을땐 독성이 없어요. 해변으로 밀려나와 죽어버린 해초는 독성물질이 되어버리죠.
