한국의 무인 라면 가게가 너무 신기한 미국인
레딧 한 유저가 한국의 무인라면가게 영상을 보고 어떻게 도둑이 안드는지 왜 미국에선 이런 가게가 없는 지 의아해 합니다.
위 영상을 본 미국인이 질문하는 사항이 한국 무인가게에선 어떻게 도둑방지를 합니까 와 왜 미국에선 이런 곳을 볼 수가 없을까요? 입니다.

I haven't seen a ramen place like this yet, but there are a few ice-cream stores, butcher shops, a stationary store, sandwich store, and pre-made meal kit places at my apartment complex that are completely unmanned.
Theft isn't a problem where I live because it's a fairly wealthy area and Korea has low theft rates anyway. Rates have been increasing, but cameras see everything in those stores and people don't want to get caught.
이런 라면 가게는 아직 여기선 못봤지만 우리 아파트 단지에서 무인으로 운영되는 몇몇 아이스크림 가게, 정육점, 문구점, 샌드위치가게, 밀키트가게는 있어요. 내가 있는 곳에선 도둑문제는 없고요. 여긴 좀 부유한 지역이거든요. 한국은 어쨌든 도둑이 거의 없다고 들었어요. 도둑이 늘어날 수도 있으나 모든 곳에 감시 카메라가 있고 사람들은 잡히고 싶어하지 않거든요.

I visited one of these stores last week. You have to buy the ramen from a vending machine so it’s impossible to steal.
There is also CCTV practically everywhere in Korea which I believe dramatically discourages theft.
Recently a middle schooler stole from an unmanned snack shop and his pictures have been posted on the internet. The store has communicated an elaborate plan to catch him. My guess is not many people want to deal with that lol
지난 주에 나도 이런 가게를 한번 가봤는데 기계에서 라면을 일단 먼저 사야해서 훔치긴 불가능합니다. 그리고 한국에선 거의 모든 곳에 CCTV가 있어서 도둑이 있긴 힘듭니다. 최근에 중학생이 무인스낵샵에서 훔쳤다고 하는데 인터넷상에 사진이 떠돌았어요. 가게는 그 학생을 잡으려고 정교한 계획을 세웠죠. 이런 문제에 엮이고 싶어 하지 않아요 한국인들은.

For the same reason that you can leave your phone/laptop/wallet sitting on a table in a cafe and not have to worry about anyone taking it. Very low petty crime rate.
한국에선 카페 테이블 위에 폰, 랩탑, 지갑 등 놓아도 아무 문제없어요. 범죄율이 매우 낮아요.
I find that in 90% of the other countries that i have visited a system like this would never work. Its pretty much South Korea and Japan and maybe a few other places where things like public restrooms, 24 hour un-manned cafes/restaurants would work.
무인시스템은 잘 적용되는 나라 거의 못봤어요. 아마 90%의 다른 국가들은 무인시스템 잘 안 도리 겁니다. 한국과 일본 그리고 얼마 안되는 몇몇 나라에서만 이럴거에요.

Very low petty crime rate.
But crime still happens though, right? So theft prevention is still necessary. South Korea isn't some utopia where everyone obeys the law.
한국이 범죄율이 매우 낮다고요? 그런데 범죄는 여전히 발생하잖아요 그렇죠? 그러니 도둑방지하는 건 여전히 필요하고요. 한국이 모든 사람들이 법을 존중하는 그런 유토피아는 아니잖아요.

It's not a utopia, but crime rate is low enough for such shops to be sustainable.
This type of questioning can go both ways btw.
I could ask:
"Why do some other countries have such high crime rates that theft prevention is necessary? Australia isn't some hell-hole where everybody disobeys the law."
A better question would be "what factors contribute to the low crime rate of some East Asian countries?"
한국이 유토피아는 아니지만 범죄율은 무인가게들이 잘 될 만큼 충분히 낮아요. 이런 질문을 할 수 있겠죠.
"왜 다른 나라에선 도둑방지책이 필요한 만큼 범죄율이 높은가요? 예를 들어 호주는 모두가 법을 어기는 나쁜 곳은 아니잖아요"
사실 더 좋은 질문은 다음과 같아요. "어떤 요소들이 있길래 몇몇 동아시아국가들은 범죄율이 낮을까?"

Honor-shame culture of the far East. Not many countries abide by it as well as they do.
극동국가들의 명예를 중요하게 여기고 수치를 싫어하는 문화같아요. 한국에서 그런 것처럼 다른 나라들은 그렇지가 않죠.

South Korea isn't some utopia where everyone obeys the law.
It's not, but as close as it can get in today's world, especially about petty theft.
You can just live bags full of groceries and a bike in the heavy foot traffic area for hours and noone will touch it. You can leave the most expensive laptop, phone and other electronics in any coffee shop in like the most busy places and noone will touch it. And this will be the case in the 99% of cases.
It was quite a culture shock. People really do think differently about those things here.
한국은 모두가 법을 잘 지키는 그런 유토피아는 아니지만 오늘 날 세계에선 거의 근접하네요. 특히 도둑에 관해선요. 한국에서는 예를 들어 장본 가방을 자전거에 두고 몇시간을 놓아두어도 아무도 안건드려요. 카페에서 비싼 랩탑이나 휴대폰 다른 전자기기를 놔둬도 그 누구도 건드리지 않죠. 이건 99%해당되는 사항이에요. 문화충격이였어요. 한국인들은 여기 미국과는 정말 다르게 생각하죠.

Literally, have never heard of any petty crime happening in South Korea. Not that it doesn’t happen, it surely does. I’ve heard of friends losing things like wallets and cell phones on trains and buses, and being able to find them at lost and found centers still intact and often with the money still inside the wallets.
I don’t know if there’s better crimes to be committed or something, but it is not that common of thing. I would say the most common petty crime I’ve heard about in Korea is bike theft.
말 그대로 한국에서 좀도둑질 사건은 한번도 못들어봤어요. 뭐 일어나긴 하겠죠. 예를들어 친구들에게 지갑이나 폰을 지하철이나 버스에서 잃어버렸단 이야기는 들었는데 분실물센터에서 다시 찾을 수 있었다 하더라고요. 돈도 그대로 다 있었고요.
좀도둑질 말고 더 큰 범죄가 있을 지는 모르겠지만 이제 도둑질은 흔한일이 아니에요. 내가 한국에서 들은 가장 좀도둑같은 사건은 자전거 도둑이였네요.

Just this weekend I was walking in Ikseondong. Someone lost a credit card, and it was just taped to a window of a nearby shop. No one looked at it twice.
바로 이번주에 저는 서울 익선동을 걷고 있었어요. 누군가 신용카드를 잃어버렸는지 근처 가게에서 그 카드를 창문에 테이프 붙여놓았더라고요. 아무도 두번이상 그걸 보지도 않았어요.

They don’t need to prevent theft. People are just more honest in Korea. Probably can’t have these in your country because the people aren’t honest enough. I know if we had this in the states it would get robbed blind, and vandalized with all the windows smashed
한국에선 도둑방지가 필요없어요. 한국인들은 정직한 편이에요. 미국에선 사람들이 그렇게 정직하지 않죠. 미국에서 무인가게 연다면 다 훔쳐가고 창문 부수고 난리나겠죠.

Well, people say they can leave their cellphone on a table and leave it there without having worry about people stealing it. Maybe that's just South Korea as a society in general.
글쎄요. 도둑 걱정하지 말고 폰이나 지갑 테이블에 놓아둬도 된다고 말하지만 그건 아마도 한국에서만 그런 것 같아요.
