미국 Vice News에서 몇개월 전에 올린 한국 재벌관련 내용입니다. 

한국어 인터뷰도 많이 믹스되어 있습니다. 

삼성, 한진 등의 재벌가문에 대한 이야기입니다. 

대기업과 중소기업의 급여차이, 대기업을 못가면 실패한 인생같다는 인터뷰 내용, 한국에서 어떻게 재벌기업들이 탄생했는지, 또 삼성전자 기흥사업장 반도체 라인에서 일하다 입사 2년만인 2005년 급성 백혈병 진단을 받고 결국엔 사망한 황유미씨의 이야기와 그녀의 아버지와의 인터뷰 내용도 있습니다.  

한참 땅콩문제로 시끄러웠던 한진 첫째딸 조현아 갑질사건에 대한 내용도 나옵니다.

It's insane how many kdrama plotlines are eerily similar to this story. I can't imagine how many cases of injustices go unheard in South Korea, it's understandable if not all parents are able to speak out for as long as this father did. Nevertheless, thank you to this incredible father and all the parents that stood alongside him for persisting.

많은 한국 드라마 줄거리에서 이 영상과 정말 유사한 내용을 보여주었어요. 부당한 많은 경우가 한국에서 귀기울여지지 않는 다는 걸 상상할 수가 없네요. 모든 부모가 영상 속 아버지처럼 당당하게 말할 수 없는 걸 이해해요. 

하지만 영상 속 아버지와 그를 함께 지지해준 다른 부모님들에게 감사합니다.

I worked for Samsung many years ago. Number-one is internal efficiencies. And the way it's achieved is by running the organization like an army. Several people I worked with became very ill from being overworked. These were high-level software engineers. Many nights during a months-long project they slept at the office on the floor...and back to work at 7A. The Korean nationals were all treated as if they were easily replaceable; just another number.

나도 삼성에서 외국인으로서 몇년전까지 일했어요. 내부 효율은 넘버원입니다. 그리고 성과를 얻는 방법은 군대처럼 조직적으로 운영되어요. 내가 함께 일했던 여러 사람들은 과로로 많이 아프기도 했어요. 그 사람들은 수준높은 소프트웨어 기술자였거든요. 여러 달에 거쳐 진행되는 프로젝트로 수많은 밤을 사무실 바닥에서 잤어요. 그러고선 다시 아침 7시에 일하러 나갔어요.

Used to work for Lotte (another well known chaebol) Signiel hotel and were told in our new employee orientation to refer them as the “royal family.”  The”royal family” used to come during the grand opening week bringing their friends and family as well and the fact that we had to treat them as if they were royalty like they were equivalent to Queen Elizabeth  was comical to me, but it was because they had “power.” 

전 또 다른 재벌기업으로 알려진 롯데 시그니엘 호텔에서 일한 적 있어요. 새로온 직원들에게 오리엔테이션에서 오너일가들을 "로열패밀리"라고 불렀죠. "로열패밀리는" 자신의 친구들과 가족들을 데리고 그랜드 오프닝 주에 왔었어요. 우리는 그들을 마치 엘리자베스 여왕과 동등한 왕족으로 대우해야 했죠. 아주 우스웠어요. 하지만 이건 그들이 "파워"를 가지고 있기 때문이죠.

What’s extra messed up about Yumi’s sad story is that it was sheer negligence that led to her death. Samsung could have prevented all that suffering just by maintaining proper fab safety practices. 

유미씨의 슬픈 이야기를 더 어지럽힌 건 그녀를 죽음으로 내몬 태만입니다. 삼성은 공장운영을 좀 더 적당하게 했다면 이 모든 걸 막을 수 있었습니다.

Such a sad and moving story. My heart breaks for Yumi's parents and for all the other parents who needlessly lost their children to corporate greed and insensitivity. It's so sad that in SK and other countries as well we let large corporations play with people's health and lives just because of profit.

너무나 슬프고 감동적인 영상입니다. 유미씨 부모와 회사의 욕심과 무감각으로 자식을 어이없이 잃어버린 모든 부모를 보면 정말 마음이 아픕니다. 한국을 비롯한 다른 나라에서 회사의 이익때문에 사람들과 건강과 삶을 가지고 노는 대기업들을 그냥 둔다는 사실은 통탄할 일입니다.

I got chills when the father said he wanted to throw her daughter ashes at the people who killed her. Such an image will never leave my mind. Such pain is unimaginable.

영상 속 유미씨 아버지가 딸의 재를 딸을 죽인 사람들에게 던져버리고 싶었다는 말을 할때 소름돋았습니다. 

제 마음속을 떠나지 않네요. 그 큰 고통을 상상조차 할 수 없습니다.

I was waiting for someone to discuss this issue. South Korea is more than the soft power of  K pop , K drama and movie industry.  There are real people who have  struggles like all of us and deserve to be heard and grievance taken seriously. I think Korean government allowed  the Chaebl  class in SK by letting them get away with it to avoid the domino economic effect it will have to drag them through court or a conviction.

이 문제를 꺼낼 사람을 기다리고 있었어요. 한국은 케이팝과 드라마 영화산업 그 이상이에요. 우리 모두처럼 열심히 싸우는 진짜 사람들이 있어요. 그들의 말은 귀기울여야 하고 그들의 슬픔은 진정으로 받아들여져야 합니다. 

한국 정부는 경제에 영향을 끼칠까봐 재벌기업들이 그런 문제들로부터 풀려날 수 있도록 했어요. 

한국 정부는 이제 그들을 끌어내려 법정에 세워야 합니다.

This is such an eye-opening documentary.  I always thought that these big rich companies have hidden stories of unfair treatment of employees. 

이건 정말 놀랄만한 다큐멘터리입니다. 이건 대기업들이 노동자들을 부당하게 대우하는 숨겨진 스토리가 있을 것이라고 항상 생각했어요.

The big question is-- what are we going to do about this? Every person needs to start taking action against these large, abusive companies (all across the world). I, for one, am now going to get rid of all of my Samsung products AND I will make sure that I send a message to every possible Samsung outlet that I can find, to let them know why. We are the consumers. We hold the power. We just forget to exercise that power. If every Samsung customer did the same- it would have a profound impact.

Yumi’s dad is a true hero. Imagine the grief and loss. But he fought against the big ones for 11+ years, thanks to those who help make his lone voice to win justice not only for Yumi but also the others who died.  

The “nut rage” of the Korean owner’s heiress was well known in the west.

The suffering and the anger of this amazing father and his family is sacred, his love for his daughter is larger than both Paciic and Atlantic Ocean combined.

I feel like the story of Yumi should have been it's own, powerful video. I think this video could have pointed to that, and then spoken more about the general problems of Chaebols.

Hopefully the company  has installed preventative measures to prevent workplace-related injuries. Kudos to Yumi's family.
