미국 러시아가 핵전쟁 하면 어떻게 될까요?

시뮬레이션 결과 전세계 인류의 70%인 53억명이 사망한다고 합니다. 

생각만 해도 너무나도 끔찍합니다. 

그런 일은 일어나지 않겠.....죠?

지난 8월 15일 블룸버그에 따르면 미국 릿거스대 교수가 이끄는 연구팀이 전세계 9개 핵보유국을 대상으로 가상 시뮬레이션을 진행했고 연구팀은 핵폭탄 폭발 직후 연기가 성층권을 덮어 기후변화 현상이 생길 것을 고려해 시뮬레이션을 진행했는데 이 결과 전세계 최소 2억 5500만명에서 최대 53억 4100만명이 목숨을 잃을 것이라는 결과가 나왔다. 핵전쟁이 나면 폭발과 방사능에 따른 사망자보다 그 이후 식량난으로 굶어죽는 인구가 더 많은 것으로 나타났다.

In the western world, the power grid alone failing would cause massive famine. Many cities don't even have a full 7 day supply of some essential products at any given time. Without electricity, we don't have the capabilities to feed even a fraction of the population.

서방세계에선 전력망 손실로도 거대 기근을 야기시킬 수 있어요. 

많은 도시들이 언제든 필요한 7일간의 생필품 조차도 제대로 가지고 있지 않아요. 

전기 없이 우린 인구 1퍼센트조차 먹일 수 없습니다.

Food? Try water. I figure a good part of the population in most major cities would be dead within a week due to lack of water.

음식이요?  물부터 먼저 생각해보자고요. 대부분의 대도시에선 물 부족으로 1주일도 안되어 모두 죽을 거에요.

Not just lack of water, but from drinking bad water. Your average person probably doesn't know how to make a water filter from environmental sources, and still others won't even boil water.

물 부족 문제 뿐만이 아니고 수질나쁜 물을 마시는 것도 문제에요. 평균적으로 사람은 어떻게 물을 정화하는 지도 몰라요. 그리고 다른 사람들은 심지어 물을 끓여마시지도 않아요.

A lot of cities also have bilge pumps running constantly to keep them from flooding and sinking into the ground. Like... a lot of them. They would just be stinking toxic cess pits nobody could even traverse.

수많은 도시들이 홍수를 막고 땅으로 범람하는 걸 막기 위해 계속해서 작동하는 펌프가 바닥에 있어요. 

전쟁 시 그것들이 주변을 지날 수도 없게 유독물질을 내뿜겠죠.

I'm gonna preface this by saying that I'm largely ignorant of "third-world country" culture in general, but at least as far as my knowledge from news clips and movies is concerned, I kind of feel like third-world countries would be better suited for a global collapse than first-world countries. Those citizens are already used to living their day to day in ways that most Americans can't even fathom or would struggle to live in similar conditions. 

전 원래 "제3세계국가"들에 무지했습니다. 하지만 적어도 뉴스클립과 영화들을 보면 전쟁시 제3세계 국가들이 

1세계 국가들보다 전쟁시 더 잘 버틸 것 같아요. 그쪽 국가 사람들은 여러가지 면에서 매일매일 그렇게 사는데 이미 익숙하잖아요. 대부분의 미국인들은 유사 조건에서 생활하는 걸 생각조차 할 수 없을 겁니다.

I read another report out of Harvard that listed famine as the number one killer following nuclear war years ago. This isn’t a new conclusion.

몇년전에 핵전쟁 관련 시뮬레이션으로 기근이 온다는 하버드 대학 보고서를 읽었습니다. 

새로운 결론도 아니네요.

Yup, when the blackout happened in the north east in August 2003, everyone in the building came upstairs to the patio and cooked literally EVERYTHING in their fridges/freezers, because everything in the fridges was thawing -- but the gas was still flowing. :)

2003년 8월 미국 북동쪽에 정전이 발생했을때 건물내 모든 사람들이 위로 올라가서 냉장고와 냉동실에 있는 모든 음식을 조리해 먹었다고 해요. 왜냐하면 모든 음식이 녹고있었거든요. 하지만 가스는 여전히 있었거든요.

Twice in two years Canada has suffered a blackout from one of it's major telecom's. It wasn't just cell, it was internet as well. The most recent one occurring last month.

Roger's services ~40% of Canadians, and Canadian business.

I was surprised the country didn't implode. But it was a stark reminder of how heavily reliant our society is on Cellular coverage and access to internet.

캐나다는 2년에 약 2번씩 큰 정전을 겪어왔어요. 휴대폰만 영향 받는 것이 아니라 인터넷도 영향 받죠. 

가장 최근에 발생한 건 지난 달이였습니다. 

캐나다인의 40%가 로저 서비스를 이용하죠. 

캐나다가 자체무너지지 않아서 놀랄뿐이였어요. 하지만 얼마나 크게 우리 사회가 휴대폰과 인터넷에 의지하고 있는 지 냉혹하게 상기시켜주었죠.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, we really need to invest more in self sustainable communities with how fragile our infrastructure can be during emergencies.

핵전쟁 시뮬레이션에 대해서 최근에 생각했었는데 비상상황에 얼마나 취약한지 자체적으로 지속가능한 커뮤니티를 위해 좀 더 투자를 해야할 것 같습니다.

Serious question -- for the folks that don't die, are they hungry? Are they barely making it? Do they have a "normal" amount of food?

What does this mean?

Some countries, as noted in the article, would still be producing food (like France) while others would not be able to.

심각한 질문: 죽지 않는 사람들이 배가 고픈가요? 겨우 살아남고 있는 것인가요? 사람들이 적당한 양의 음식을 먹을까요?  이게 다 무슨 의미죠? 

기사에서 언급된 몇몇국가들은 (프랑스처럼) 여전히 식량생산을 하고 있을 겁니다. 반면 어떤 국가들은 그렇게 못하고 있겠죠.

Greater scarcity for everyone. Minor wars and aggression over existing food and water. Cannibalism in many places.

모두에게 부족과 결핍이 생기겠죠. 남아있는 음식과 물을 위한 크고작은 전쟁들이 연이어 발생할 것입니다. 

인육을 먹는 많은 곳들도 생길겁니다.

The problem is that most of the fossil fuels accessible by low tech extraction have already been extracted.

There's a lot of fossil fuels left, but we need modern mining and drilling techniques to access them, and if we lose that technology, we won't be able to extract much more.

Really it depends on the lost technology.

문제는 낮은 추출기술로 접근가능한 대부분의 화석연료가 이미 거의 추출되었다는 점입니다. 

많은 화석연료가 남아있지만 접근 가능한 현대적인 채굴기술이 필요하죠. 그리고 그 기술이 없으면 더 많이 채굴할 순 없을 것입니다. 정말 그건 없는 기술에 의존하게 되는 겁니다.
