지나친 자국 팁 문화에 지친 미국인들

Am I the only person who feels so so bullied by tip culture in restaurants that eating out is hardly enjoyable anymore?

요즘 식당 팁 문화에 있어 너무나 스트레스 받는 건 나만 그렇게 느끼는 건가요?

더이상 외식하는 즐거움을 거의 느낄수가 없네요. 

팬데믹 이후 음식값과 더불어 팁 퍼센티지 까지 올려받는 식당들 때문에 피로해하는 미국인들이 많습니다. 팁 문화는 미국에서 오랫된 전통이였는데 과한 팁과 달라지지 않은 서비스로 피로감을 느끼고있습니다. 

특히 미국의 한국식당에선 팁을 본인들이 생각한 것 만큼 지불하지 않으면 쫒아나와 돈 더 내고 가라고 하는 사례도 많다고합니다.

I think after demanding tips from self checkout it needs to be outlawed.

셀프계산대에서조차 팁을 요구하는 건 법에 어긋나는 것 같아요.

I almost never go out to a sit down meal. It's just not in the budget too much, and it's pretty exhausting to go out with a small child who wants to climb and fidget.

이제 밖에서 거의 안먹어요. 예산에도 맞지 않고요 여기저기 올라타고 잠시도 가만히 있지 못하는 어린아이 데리고 외식하는 건 지치는 일이에요.

The girl at my local sandwich shop audibly scoffed when I dropped a dollar in the tip bin. I'm still like... mad about it.

동네 샌드위치 가게에서 일하는 어떤 여성은 내가 팁 통에 1달러 넣으면 들리게 비웃어요. 정말 짜증나요.

Aussie here, we dont tip because its seriously just a stupid system. The price written on the menu is the price. The employer pays the wage and the employee shouldn’t rely on charity to earn a decent wage.

So…fuck off with your tipping culture America. You had to hear it from from someone.

여기 호주에선 바보같은 팁 시스템 따르지 않아요. 메뉴에 적힌 가격이 가격이죠. 고용주는 임금을 지불하고 노동자는 자비에 기대면 안되죠. 그니까 미국의 멍청한 팁 문화좀 그만 따라요. 다른나라 말좀 들어요.

South American living in Europe, same here. tipping is completely voluntary. America is absolutely ridiculous.

유럽에 사는 남미사람인데 유럽도 그래요. 팁은 정말 온전히 자발적인거죠. 미국은 너무 우스워요.

Many servers don’t want minimum wage because they’re worried they’ll make less if they get it.

20% is perfectly fine for good service. The thing is now they give you the option to tip and the options are usually 20, 35 and 40%. It’s absolutely ridiculous, I worked for tips my whole young adult life and 20% was a good tip… now if you don’t pay almost half of your bill as a tip, then you definitely get judged. I went to order something online the other day and it asked me to tip. I don’t even know who the hell I’m tipping. The person throwing something in a box?

괜찮은 서비스라면 20% 팁 이면 충분합니다. 그런데 요즘 팁 옵션을 누르게 되어있죠. 그리고 그 옵션엔 20%, 35% 그리고 40%까지나 있어요. 완전 황당한거죠. 젊은시절 팁 받으며 일한 적 있는데 20%면 좋은 팁이였어요. 지금은 계산서 거의 절반에 해당하는 팁을 지불하지 않으면 비난받는 분위기죠. 저번에 온라인으로 주문했는데도 팁을 요구하더라고요. 도대체 난 누구에게 팁을 주는 지도 모르겠어요. 박스에 음식 집어던지는 그 누군가에게?

If you don’t want to tip, then don’t do it. No one can tell you what to do with your money in that scenario. The only time tipping should be expected is when you’re dining in at a full service restaurant, if you’re in America.

팁 주기 싫으면 그냥 주지마요. 아무도 그 돈가지고 뭐라 하지 못해요. 그런데 풀서비스로 제공받은 그런 식당에서 저녁을 먹는다면, 미국에서 그렇게 하고 있다면 팁을 주는게 맞아요.

I went out for a Thanksgiving meal a few years back and it was a Buffet: Self-serve. The wait staff only brought us our drinks. The restaurant included an 18% gratuity for my party of 2 adults and a 3 yr-old child. I normally would only go 10% tip on a buffet. I found the inclusion of 18% to be outrageous. That was just uncalled for, IMO. I never went back.

몇년전 추수감사절때 부페가서 외식했어요. 셀프서비스였죠. 웨이터는 우리에게 음료수만 가져다주었어요. 그런데 식당은 성인 두명과 3살 아이 계산서에 18%의 팁을 포함시켰어요. 보통 부페에선 10%팁을 지불하는데 18%청구되어있는 거 보고 완전 열받았어요. 진짜 부당한겁니다. 절대 거기 다시 안갔어요.

I just don't tip and don't care. I only order take out anyway. I don't tip the cashier at the grocery store and I'm definitely not going to tip the cashier at the restaurant.

난 그냥 팁 안주고 신경안써요. 그리고 테이크아웃만 합니다. 식료품점에서 계산원에게 팁 안주잖아요. 식당에서 계산하는 사람에게도 당연히 팁 안주죠.

I started cooking during the pandemic, and now my wife prefers my cooking to going out. She says its cheaper, faster (for her lol), and tastes better without having to resort to way too much butter/oil/salt. 90% of the magic is good ingredients from the local farmers market. 

팬데믹동안 요리를 시작했는데 이제 내 부인은 외식하는 것보다 내가 만들어주는 걸 더 좋아해요. 더 싸고 (부인에겐 ㅋㅋ) 더 빠르고 버터나, 기름 소금 등을 너무 많이 안쓰면서 맛도 더 좋다고해요. 90%의 마법은 동네 좋은 식료품점에서 구매하는 좋은 식재료에 있어요.

I am a server and we do not care what you tip unless you absolutely ruin our day or wreck your table, requiring extra cleanup while still working other tables

저는 서버인데요 뭔가를 망치지 않는한 혹은 다른 테이블에서 일하는데 더 치워줘야 할 일이 있지 않는 한 팁 안준다고 해도 별로 신경안써요.
