I worked in a Sony TV factory for a few months.

It was in a windowless basement nicknamed "The Dungeon".

The job involved picking up glass panels from boxes and putting them on a conveyor belt. Alone. For 12 hours. At night. That was it.

I lasted a few months.

The breaking point came when I tried to go for as long as possible without looking at the clock. I lasted for what must have been an hour. Maybe two.

I finally cracked and checked my watch...ten minutes had passed.

몇달동안 쏘니 텔레비전 공장에서 일했는데 "던전"이라는 별명이 붙은 창문없는 지하실이였어요. 

일에는 상자에서 유리판넬을 꺼내서 컨베이어 벨트에 올리는 것도 포함되어있었어요. 혼자 12시간동안 그 일을 했고요. 밤에도요. 그게 다였어요. 몇달동안은 버텼죠. 시계도 안보고 할 수 있는 한 일하려고 노력했을때 한계가 왔어요. 한두시간 지났다고 생각하고 드디어 난 무너져 시계를 봤는데 10분밖에 지나지 않은 거 있죠.

I worked in an egg packing facility. Imagine the smell of rotten eggs constantly. Even after you leave-- it gets into your hair and skin --and strangers walk WAY around you. Showering helps but the smell clings to you. I quit after a week.

계란포장공장에서 일했어요. 늘 썩은 계란 냄새를 맡아야 한다고 생각해봐요. 일을 관둔 후에도 머리카락과 피부에 냄새가 남아있었어요. 샤워하면 잠깐은 없어지지만 그 냄새는 몸에 남아있어요. 일주일뒤에 바로 관뒀어요.

I also worked at an egg packing plant. I was sanitation so I had to clean the egg packers an that shit was terrible. Not my worst job but definitely up there in my list.

나도 계란포장공장에서 일한 적 있는데 위생시설에 있어서 포장담당직원들을 씻겨줘야했어요. 진짜 지독했어요. 최악의 일은 아니였지만 내 리스트엔 있네요.

The job itself wasn’t bad, the business owner was a nightmare. If we were eating lunch and a customer came in, everyone had to stop eating and be on the floor until they left. While the boss sat on her fat ass. She wouldn’t wait on customers long enough to let us have 5-10 minutes to quicky scarf down food, or stagger our breaks so one person got to eat at a time. If customers kept coming in, we didn’t get to eat. 

일 자체는 나쁘지 않았는데 고용주가 악몽이였어요. 점심먹고 있었는데 손님이 들어와서 모두들 먹는 걸 멈추고 손님들이 나갈때까지 대기했어요. 그러는 동안 뚱보사장은 앉아있었죠. 사장은 손님들이 나가고 난 뒤에도 우리가 먹을 수 있는 시간을 5~10분밖에 주지 않았어요. 손님들이 계속해서 들어오면 우린 먹을 수도 없었어요.

As a teenager I scraped the gum off of the bottom of school chairs during the summer, all alone, before cell phones existed, with no air conditioning.

난 청소년 여름방학때 학교 바닥에 붙어있는 껌 떼어내는 일을 했어요. 전부 다 혼자했는데 그땐 휴대폰이있기도 전이였죠. 에어컨도 없었고요.

맥도날드에서 일했을때. 코카인 흡입한 매니저들이 소리지를땐 정말 재미없어요.

I had a data entry job for a few months. The work was really boring but otherwise fine. But it was in a remote area during the winter. So it was dark when I arrived in the morning and dark by the time I left. We weren't close enough to anything to go out for lunch so I always packed. We were also in the interior of the building so there were no windows. So Monday through Friday, I literally did not see the sun. Not a great time in my life..

몇달동안 데이터 입력하는 일을 했는데 너무나 지루한 것 빼곤 괜찮았어요. 하지만 겨울에 외딴 지역에서 하는 일이였죠. 아침에 해뜨기전에 도착해서 퇴근할때도 밤이였고요. 점심먹으러 어디 나갈수도 없었고 항상 도시락을 싸왔어요. 창문도 없는 실내였고요. 그렇게 월요일부터 금요일까지 일하니 햇빛을 볼수가 없었어요. 내 인생에서 좋은 시간이 아니였어요.

Worked as a meat packer making hot dogs. 

Covered in blood every day, wearing rubber aprons, knee high fishing boots, and lab coats. My dog would lick me non stop when I would come home.

핫도그 만드는 고기 포장직원으로 일했던 것이 최악이였어요. 매일 피로 덮여서 고무로된 앞치마를 입고 장화를 신고 긴 가운을 입었었죠. 집에 도착하면 우리집개가 나를 매일 핥았어요.

텔레마케팅. 매일 8시간동안 잡다한 잡지구독해달라고 시간당 7.25달러 받으며 전화돌렸어요.

Warehousing during college.

Couldn’t get a job anywhere else so I worked 12am to 8am most weekends and some weekdays, made the princely sum of 11$ an hour too.

Got me through college, but man I still have some lasting physical issues from just how brutal the work was.

대학시절 창고에서 일했어요. 다른 일을 구할수가 없어 밤 12시부터 아침8시까지 대부분 주말에 일했고 어쩔땐 평일에도 일했어요. 그때 시간당 11달러 받았었죠. 학교를 겨우 졸업했는데 아직도 그때 일한 것 때문에 몸이 여전히 아파요. 얼마나 일이 험했는지.

I operated kiddie rides for a local amusement park one summer.

한 여름에 지역 놀이공원에서 어린이용 놀이기구를 조종해줬는데 이게 최악이였어요.
