특이한 네덜란드 문화 

일반적인 집 같아 보이는 사진입니다. 네덜란드에선 다른 사람집 창문을 통해 들여다보니것이 매우 부적절한 행동으로 여긴다 합니다. 그런 이유로 오히려 각 가정 창문에 대부분 커튼을 달지 않습니다. 또 유럽국가 중 상당히 느린 곳으로도 유명합니다. 식당을 가든 뭘 하든 기본적으로 기다리는 시간이 길기 때문에 인내심을 요한다 하네요.

It’s incredible how slow restaurant service is in the Netherlands, it’s like you cannot show up to a restaurant hungry because you will starve before you can get actual food and the waiter will insist on taking the drinks order and then serving it first even if you know what you want to eat.

네덜란드 식당서비스 느리기로 진짜 유명하죠. 너무 배고플땐 식당가면 안돼요. 왜냐면 실제로 음식 먹을 수 있을때까지 굶주려야 하거든요. 또 웨이터는 손님이 무슨 음식 주문할 지 정해도 음료 주문 먼저 받아서 서빙해줘요.

I have worked in the Netherlands more than 40 years ago. My recollection is that Dutch people go to restaurants on social occasions. I do not remember anybody going to a restaurant just to eat. 

40년도 더 전에 네덜란드에서 일했었는데 네덜란드 사람들은 어떤 행사가 있을때만 식당에 가요. 아무도 그저 먹기위해 식당에 가진 않아요.

It was a hot summer, when we have been there. People used to be very naked, except for underwear - what you could see through the windows, they sat on their couches, watching TV, nearly naked.

Hmm, we have been there a few times and with a guide the first time around, who told us the opposite, they do not have curtains in a lot of cases because they are proud of their rooms and quite like you looking in their windows

음... 우리도 네덜란드 몇번 가봤는데 가이드는 반대로 이야기해줬어요. 네덜란드 집 창문에 커튼이 없는 이유는 집에 대한 자부심이 크기 때문이죠.

How long you have to wait in a restaurant really depends on where you eat. Typically the more expensive restaurants have slower service. Its their way of not rushing you and giving you the time for the dining experience, where the cheaper places have faster service, so you can eat up and make room for the next quests.

저도 네덜란드 사람인데 사진의 집은 어딘지 모르겠으나 많은 사람들이 커튼달고 살아요. 레스토랑에서 기다리는 시간은 어디서 먹느냐에 따라 달라요. 보통 비싼 곳일수록 서비스가 느리죠. 그런 곳일수록 손님을 급하게 하지 않고 천천히 식사할 수 있는 경험을 누리게 해요. 싼 곳은 서비스도 빠르고 어서 먹고 다른 사람에게 자리를 주는거죠.

As a New Zealander, these were my culture shocks. In Germany I was shocked they sold beer at McDonalds. 

뉴질랜드 사람으로서 여러가지 문화충격 받은 건 독일에선 맥도날드에서 맥주를 파는거요.

When I visited the Netherlands (many decades ago) I eventually found it was normal courtesy in a restaurant (not in a fast-food joint. though) to defer presenting the bill until it was actually asked for by the customer. Maybe a party would prefer to sit around in conversation (and perhaps order more drinks from time to time) right up to closing time.

오래전 네덜란드 방문했을때 패스트푸드점이 아닌 식당에서 손님이 요청할때까지 계산서 가져다주지 않는 것은 일반적이였어요. 식당에 온 사람들은 앉아서 대화하며 있는 걸 좋아하는 거죠. 혹은 때때로 마감시간까지 음료를 더 주문하면서요.

Actually I never close my curtains because I have a great view, and I really don’t even care if people are looking at me while I am watching TV, or me sitting at my laptop, or me eating…LOL….

우리집은 너무 예뻐서 나도 커튼 절대 치지 않아요. 그리고 밖에 지나가는 사람들이 내가 티비를 모든 노트북 앞에 앉아있던 쳐다봐도 전혀 신경쓰지 않아요.
