It was an emotional scene as his playing partners let him walk over the Swilken Bridge on the 18th hole.

It was then that the moment hit Woods and the tears started to build. This might be the last hurrah, at least at the Old Course, where he’s won two Open Championships.

“It's very emotional for me. I've been coming here since 1995. I think the next one comes around in 2030 so and I don't know if I will be physically able to play by then. To me it felt like this might have been my last British Open here at St. Andrews,” Woods said after shooting 75 for a two-round total of 9-over 153.

The Old Course is Woods’ unrivaled favorite. He’s said it several times. Even before he dominated it in 2000 and 2005 for two of his three Claret Jugs. Its strategic principles, the way it requires players to plot their way around, its demand for shotmaking and its extensive history are all reasons he loves it.

18번 홀 페어웨이를 걸어 그린에 오르던 우즈는 눈물을 흘리기 시작했다. 페어웨이 양쪽을 둘러싼 갤러리가 박수와 함성으로 응원하자 모자를 벗어 답례하고 손을 흔들었지만 눈에는 눈물이 하염없이 흘렀다.

우즈는 “다음 번에는 이 곳에 다시 오기 어렵다는 걸 깨달았다”고 말했다. 5년마다 한 번씩 디오픈을 치르는 세인트앤드루스 올드코스에서 다시 디오픈이 열리는 것은 빨라야 2027년으로 예상된다. 5년 후면 우즈의 나이는 52세다.

우즈는 “자주 눈물을 흘리는 사람이 아니다. 팬들은 내가 컷 탈락할 것이라는 사실을 알고 있었지만 점점 더 크게 환호했다”면서 “이 대회는 정말 존경스럽다. 나는 이 대회의 전통을 우러르고 있다”고 말했다. 이어 “다시 이곳에 돌아오면 경기 할 몸이 아닐지도 모른다. 디오픈에 출전해도 경쟁할 수는 없을 것 같다”면서도 “그러나 은퇴는 하지 않는다”고 강조했다.
