# ‘If’ Rudyard Kipling #

만약에, "If" 는 러디어드 키플링이 1910년 어느 날, 자신의 12살이 된 아들을 위해 아버지로서의 자신의 바람을 적은 詩이다.

"만일(If)"

만일 네가 모든 걸 잃고 모두가 너를 비난할 때

냉정을 유지할 수 있다면

만일 모든 사람이 너를 의심하고 또한 그들의 의심을 인정해야 할 때

네 스스로를 신뢰할 수 있다면

만일 네가 기다리면서 기다림에 지치지 않을 수 있다면

속임을 당하더라도 속임으로 답하지 않는다면

그리고 너무 선한 체 너무 현명한 체 않는다면

만일 네가 꿈을 꾸면서도 꿈의 노예가 되지 않을 수 있다면

또한 어떤 생각을 하면서도 그 생각을 목표로 삼지 않을 수 있다면

만일 승리와 재앙을 만나더라도 그 협잡꾼들을 똑같이 대할 수 있다면

네가 말한 진실이 왜곡되어 악인들이 너를 욕하더라도

너 자신은 그 진실을 참으며 들어줄 수 있다면

혹은 만일 너의 전 생애를 바친 일이 무너지더라도

낡은 연장을 들고 서서 다시 세울 수 있다면

몸을 굽히고서 그걸 다시 일으켜 세울 수 있다면

네가 쌓아올린 모든 것을 걸고 단한번의 내기에 걸 수 있다면

그래서 다 잃더라도 처음부터 다시 시작할 수 있다면

그러면서도 네가 잃은 것에 대해 한마디 말도 하지 않을 수 있다면

다 잃은 뒤에도 변함없이

네 심장과 신경과 힘줄이 너를 위해 일할 수 있다면

설령 너에게 아무 것도 남아있지 않는다 해도

강한 의지로 그것들을 지속할 수 있다면

만일 여러 사람들과 이야기하면서도 네 자신의 덕을 지킬 수 있고

왕과 함께 걸으면서도 상식을 잃지 않을 수 있다면

만일 적이든 친구든 너를 해치지 않게 할 수 있다면

모두가 너에게 도움을 청하되 너무 의존하지 않게 할 수 있다면

그리고 만일 네가 용서할 수 없는 1분간을

60초의 춤추는 시간으로 채울 수 있다면

이 세상과 그 안에 있는 모든 것은 너의 것이며

그리고 더욱이

My grandads favourite poem, I read it for him at his funeral. Hardest but most rewarding thing I've ever done.

Kipling wrote the poem in 1910 as a father's wish for his 12 year old son. 5 years later his only son died during WWI.
